Sustainable Cleveland 2019 got underway this week with a 300 page guide that will play a big role at the summit. The guide, which cost $200,000 to put together, includes a 10-year "action" plan with the year 2014 designated for zero waste.

Wait. A $200,000 guide? What? That seems like the opposite of zero waste.

I need to dive into this a little deeper... does the action plan start now with the end goal of zero waste by 2014? Or is 2014 the year of zero waste? Seems the most sane and logical thing for all of us to do (individual, institution, business) is to start now with something and keep expanding to include more and more waste streams.

It was described by summit organizers as: "more like a tool kit than a blueprint"; "It's not a top down action plan, It's a beginning, not an end."; "It's like a cookbook, but without exact recipes." Got it? Imagine what SEE could do with 200k! With an annual budget of only 15k, SEE has helped over 10 schools adopt a zero waste philosophy this year alone. We have other schools that want our assistance but finances limit our activities. Talk Less. Do More!
